Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around finding schools that offer a bachelor's degree in psychiatry, with a focus on the educational pathways required to become a psychiatrist in different countries, particularly China and Australia. Participants explore the necessary qualifications and the competitive nature of medical education.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant, Len Hao, expresses a desire to find schools offering a bachelor's degree in psychiatry and requests assistance in contacting educational agents.
  • Another participant clarifies that in the US, a bachelor's degree in psychiatry does not exist, as one must obtain a medical degree to become a psychiatrist, suggesting that Len might be referring to psychology instead.
  • A third participant echoes this point regarding Australia, explaining that psychiatry is a specialization within medicine, requiring a 4-6 year medical program followed by additional years of specialization.
  • This participant also notes the competitive nature of medical school admissions in Australia, mentioning that while spots are available for international students, the process is highly selective and costly.
  • Len Hao inquires about the complexity of the education system in Australia and seeks recommendations for the best medical schools, as well as information about the education plan.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that a bachelor's degree in psychiatry is not available and that a medical degree is necessary to pursue a career as a psychiatrist. However, there is no consensus on the best educational pathway or specific schools, and the discussion remains unresolved regarding the complexities of the admission process in Australia.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding the understanding of educational systems in different countries, particularly concerning the definitions of psychiatry and psychology, as well as the specific requirements for international students.

I don't know how it works in China, but in the US, you cannot get a bachelors degree in psychiatry - you need to get a medical degree to become a psychiatrist. Your undergraduate degree doesn't matter as long as you took the premed classes. Were you perhaps thinking of psychology? That's a very common major, offered at most colleges and universities.

What was said by the poster above also applies in australia. A psychiatrist is a specialization of medicine and thus you need a 4-6 year program in medicine. You then need to do medical registration and then you specialize in some field which takes a further 4-6 years.

If you're interested in psychology a typical program takes about 6 years while in the process you have to maintain very high marks to go to the next stage.

Medicine programs do accept foreigners in australia, but its very very competitive and it will cost you a lot of money (at least that's how it is in australia). There are some spots reserved for international students. Only a few thousand candidates (possibly even lower) get a spot to do medicine so overall don't be surprised if you miss out the first time.

is that mean the education is complicated in australia or the addmission

is the complicated point in australia and what is the best school for medicin in australia

and if anybody know about the education plan please tell me

thanke you every body for your reply
