AI Thread Summary
AlexB23 has been temporarily banned for 10 days as part of an experiment he requested to understand the experience of being banned. This decision was communicated to the moderators, and discussions about the implications of such a ban have emerged, including the idea of introducing a "lent" for forum users. Participants in the thread express concern about the addictive nature of forums and share personal anecdotes related to their own experiences with online engagement. AlexB returned to the discussion, humorously reflecting on his time away and the rapid passage of the 10 days. The conversation highlights both the lighthearted and serious aspects of online community dynamics.

I notice that @AlexB is banned.

On first blush, I suspect that this is part of a test; he spoke to me about wanting to be blocked temporarily as an experiment. Did he also speak to the moderators about a similar experiment?

Physics news on Phys.org
Hold on, let me take a look.

Okay, I spoke with the Mentor who did it, and he says that Alex requested a 10-day temporary ban from PF to see what it looked like to be banned. He asked me about it in our long PM conversation a few weeks ago, but I recommended that he not try it. Looks like he decided to try another Mentor, LOL. He'll be back soon enough, and hopefully will comment in this thread about his experience...

If this catches on, we must introduce a lent.

Does this make him a digital biohacker?

He also asked me personally if I could block him temporarily, but I didn't hear back before he went to phase II.

I wonder if he's still here, lurking, reading this at this very moment...

PF is dramatically less user friendly when one is not logged in.

...that peace of mind what comes with a 'cannot' instead of a 'choose not' can be very tempting.
Been there, done that...
Hopefully he'll be back soon.

...It all started nearly ten years ago.
It was just weekends at first, just for a laugh with mates, only reading not posting.
Within a few months I was doing pf at least twice a day.
When I gave all my pop sci books to charity I knew I had a problem...

Haha, I did do that once, where I asked for a Lent ban on a forum for 40 days.

Haha, I did not see a tunnel of stars, but 10 days went by at warp speed.

Please ban him again for mixing Star Wars and Star Trek metaphors.

Yep. Both the Star Wars fans and the Star Trek fans attack me simultaneously, and enjoy my joke at the same time.
