Homework Statement



In circuits, when we represent a battery we note by a long vertical line(positive) followed by a short vertical line(negative). But in some circuits, we follow a long line followed by a short line, again a long line and a short line with dots between them. What does this signify?

The single pair of lines usually represents a single cell. A dry cell of the type used in torches and digital cameras have an Emf of 1.5 Volts. The wet cell that is part of a car battery has an Emf of 2 volts.
To get a higher Emf, we use a whole battery of cells [thus the name battery] connected together in series.
6 dry cells will make 9V [that is why those little 9V batteries have the shape they have - there are 6 small cells packed together in two rows of 3].
6 wet cells [lead-acid] make a 12 Volt Battery. many Car batteries even have the 6 little caps at the top for adding water to each of the 6 cells separately.

The row of dots in the battery symbol is to emphasise that this is a battery of cells, not a single cell. We don't always emphasise this.
