Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding suitable software for creating professional diagrams for lab reports, particularly in the context of physics and optical systems. Participants are exploring options that are free or inexpensive and suitable for use with word processing software.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about programs for drawing diagrams for lab reports, expressing a need for tools beyond basic applications like Paint.
  • Another participant suggests using Visio, mentioning that students may be able to obtain it for free.
  • A different participant reports difficulty accessing the Visio purchase page and notes a lack of information regarding student copies on the website.
  • Another reply indicates that a Dreamspark account is necessary to download Visio for free, prompting further exploration of that option.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the best software options, as some suggest Visio while others express challenges in accessing it. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the most effective tools available.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include potential issues with accessing software websites and the requirement of specific accounts for free downloads, which may not be universally applicable.

I wasn't sure which section to post this, I was going to put this in learning materials:
https://www.physicsforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=151

But it says I cannot post there...anyway,

Are there any good programs, preferably free or inexpensive, that are useful for drawing professional looking diagrams for lab reports typed in word? Paint is really the only tool I have at the moment, for circuits I know of a site called circuit lab, but at the moment I am typing up a lab report on an analysis of an optical system and it I am going to need to be able to make diagrams to define all the points, distances, planes etc. with symbols. I have no idea what physicist typically use, so any suggestions would be appreciated...

thanks..

Visio, if you're a student you should be able to get a free copy.

You have to have a dreamspark account to download it free, google dreamspark.
