Best Video Editing Software for G4 Mac with Tiger 10.4.9

I am running a G4 mac with Tiger 10.4.9 on it. I was wondering what a good video editing software for a mac would be.

What sort of editing do you want to do? I use iMovie (actually an older version, at least a couple of versions preceding the current iMovie HD) that comes with iDVD for simple DVD authoring, as part of Apple's iLife suite. Didn't they come with your Mac? They did with mine, and I've upgraded them once since then by buying my own copy of iLife.

These work with DV files, so for extracting video from DVDs that I've burned on a DVD recorder, I also have to use something like MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV to convert MPEG to DV.

But my needs aren't very fancy. I digitize old VHS tapes with iMovie and an external analog to digital video converter, edit out commercials and make DVDs from them. Sometimes I compile material from DVDs that I've recorded from broadcast TV with a standalone DVD recorder, and make new compilation DVDs.

That is really helpful. My Mac G4 is about 4 years old. It originally was running OS9 on it but recently I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.9. When I did that, some of the applications will not load. (i.e. garage band, iMovie, etc.). My mom used this computer for graphic design and she is a proffesional for a big hospital. Her computer at work is a G5 with the same software as this one. I recently took Garage Band of off her computer and put it on to this one. I needed that for my music work. But, it took tons of work because it was a huge program, probably a few gigs, and this computer doesn't have a DVD Rom drive. So I put it on about 9 different CD's. It was a lot of work. So, is there any way of avoiding that, like dowloading it somewhere? Or do I need to buy something? Thanks a lot for helping me here and in my other post of "Help Please"

I don't think Apple makes those applications available for download. As you note, they're huge. For transferring very large files, the two things I would think about are an external hard disk (USB2 or Firewire), or a broadband network connection.

If you got the $$$$, I would suggest Final Cut, or Final Cut Pro. This stuff is however for advanced user that have a good knowledge in editing, good stuff though. Otherwise imovie would work for ameuters

This discussion prompted me to look into upgrading my copies of iMovie and iDVD because I'm still using version 4. Apple has recently released iLife '08 (the third version following mine). It includes iMovie HD '08, which does not run on a G4 processor!

Fortunately, Amazon lists the preceding version (iLife '06) as still available through J&R Music World, so I ordered a copy last night. According to one of the tech notes on Apple's web site, this version does run on a G4.

It looks like I needn't have scrambled for iLife '06 after all. According to the discussion forums on Apple's web site, people who buy the new iLife '08 can download iMovie '06 for free, apparently to accommodate people using Macs with G4 processors.

It also looks like Apple has changed the focus of iMovie significantly, steering it away from being a video-editing app, and more towards organizing a collection of videos. They removed many video-editing features in '08, including setting chapter marks (which I do a lot when making DVDs)! The Apple forums are really buzzing about this. A lot of people are outraged or disappointed about this.
