Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around recommendations for books that can assist physics majors in improving their understanding of concepts and problem-solving skills. The focus is on resources that provide challenging exercises and thorough explanations, particularly for students who are not beginners but are struggling with their coursework.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks suggestions for books that enhance understanding of physics concepts without relying heavily on numerical calculations.
  • Another participant recommends the "University Physics" textbook for its problem sets and suggests obtaining the teacher's solution manual for detailed solutions.
  • A different participant mentions "Halliday Resnick Krane - Physics I and II" and the "Feynman lectures" as valuable resources.
  • One suggestion is to consider an AP Physics C prep book for foundational knowledge.
  • A participant questions whether "Barrons College Review in AP Physics" and "3000 solved problems in Physics" would be suitable, particularly regarding the difficulty level of the problems presented.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying opinions on which books are most beneficial, indicating that multiple competing views exist regarding the best resources for physics majors.

Contextual Notes

Some recommendations may depend on the specific curriculum and teaching methods at different universities, as well as the individual student's learning style and needs.

Who May Find This Useful

Physics majors, particularly those in their first year seeking to improve their understanding and problem-solving skills in physics.

Hi. I am a physics major although I am having a hard time getting good marks in the first semester of my first year. I just wanted any suggestions from peers and any senior students if there are any books out there which I can use as a physics major to understand concepts thoroughly and has a set of difficult exercises which, after practicing, would help me become better at physics. I would like to put it out there that physics at my university involves very few numbered calculations.. Are there any books which I can use to understand the concepts (I am not a beginner) and enhance my variable physics, if I may say?

Thank you in advance.

For basic physics, I really like University Physics textbook for problems, and Fundamentals of Physics for explanations.

yeap "University Physics" textbook is a good one for problems. Get a hold of teachers solution manual (not student guide), it has detailed solutions to all the problems...do as many as you can!

Halliday Resnick Krane - Physics I and II and the Feynman lectures

Oh first year? Get an AP Physics C prep book.

Would Barrons College Review in AP Physics work? Also would 3000 solved problems in Physics be a good book to use as practice or are they elementary problems?
