Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the consideration of switching from a specialization in optics within a B.S. in physics to a major in physics with a minor in computer science. Participants are exploring the viability and benefits of this combination.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses dissatisfaction with their current specialization in optics and seeks insights on transitioning to a physics major with a computer science minor.
  • Another participant inquires about the specific courses required for the computer science minor, suggesting that programming experience is beneficial in scientific fields.
  • A different participant asserts that a computer science minor is useful and encourages the switch.
  • A subsequent post lists potential courses for the computer science minor, including computer architecture, programming with C++, and topics in algorithms and AI.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is a general agreement on the usefulness of a computer science minor, but the discussion does not resolve whether it is the best path for the original poster.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not discuss specific career implications or personal experiences related to the proposed change, leaving some assumptions about the benefits of the combination unexamined.

Who May Find This Useful

Students considering a shift in their academic focus, particularly those interested in the intersection of physics and computer science.

hi guys !

i am currently in my 3rd year of my B.s in physics with a specialization in optics , but , i don't like optics at all , so i had this idea of taking a major in physics and minor in computer science.
i would like to know if you think its a good combination .

need some insights

thank you

What sort of courses would the computer science minor require? Experience with programming is never a bad thing in the sciences, I'd say.

Computer science is a useful minor. I say go for it.

courses like computer architecture , programming with C++, introduction to software development, OS,algorithm,Ai, unix and so on..
