Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around ideas and inspiration for creating Rube Goldberg machines, focusing on the creativity involved in designing overly complicated methods to perform simple tasks. Participants share their thoughts on potential tasks and humorous concepts related to the machines.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that individuals should come up with their own ideas for Rube Goldberg machines by selecting simple tasks and complicating them unnecessarily.
  • Another participant mentions having a machine designed for crushing a can and expresses interest in gathering more ideas to potentially combine with their existing design.
  • A humorous suggestion is made about creating a machine to wake up a cat, which leads to a playful exchange about the implications of involving a cat in such a project.
  • One participant questions the relevance of a comment about quantum indeterminacy in relation to Rube Goldberg machines.
  • A later reply proposes incorporating the concept of Schrödinger's cat into a Rube Goldberg machine, adding a layer of humor and complexity to the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally share a lighthearted approach to brainstorming ideas for Rube Goldberg machines, but there are differing views on the relevance of certain humorous comments, particularly those involving quantum mechanics and cats.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes playful and humorous elements that may not directly relate to the mechanics of Rube Goldberg machines, reflecting a blend of creativity and abstract thinking.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in creative engineering, design challenges, or those looking for inspiration for playful projects may find this discussion engaging.

Any ideas for a good Rube Goldberg Machine anyone?

Thousands, but you really should think one up for yourself. Just pick some everyday simple task (like frying an egg or tying your shoes) and figure out the dumbest, most complicated way possible to do it.

i already have one for crushing a can and it's pretty good i must say, i just want some other ideas so later i might want to try some or maybe combine some or something to kill some time

I can think of several interesting ways to wake up a cat.

Not Erwin's cat, I hope! Quantum indeterminancy should not be toyed with.

in what way does this have any coherence with a Rube Goldberg machine?

Make the Scrödinger's cat experiment part of your machine and see what happens.
