Building a Bridge with Balsa Wood

Click For Summary
When building a bridge with balsa wood, choosing between the Howe and Pratt truss designs is crucial for meeting specific requirements. The bridge must not exceed a mass of 25 grams and must support a test load of 15 kg while allowing a 5 cm cube to pass without contact. Additionally, a central opening of at least 1 cm x 1 cm is necessary for the loading block bolt. Participants suggest creating designs using drawing sheets or AutoCAD for optimal construction. Ultimately, careful design consideration will ensure the bridge meets all specified criteria.

I need to make a bridge using Balsa Wood, but I can't decide whether to use the Howe or Pratt Truss.

Requirements
maximum mass of 25 grams
maximum test load will be 15kg
must allow a 5.0 (∼2”) cm cube to pass along the roadway without touching
the structure
must be an opening at the center of the roadway of at least 1 cm x 1 cm. This will
allow the loading block bolt to pass through the roadway.

Any thoughts?

What mathematics software should engineering students use? Is it correct that much of the engineering industry relies on MATLAB, making it the tool many graduates will encounter in professional settings? How does SageMath compare? It is a free package that supports both numerical and symbolic computation and can be installed on various platforms. Could it become more widely used because it is freely available? I am an academic who has taught engineering mathematics, and taught the...
