Bullet Mass & Speed: Impact on Block Motion

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the conservation of momentum principle applied to a bullet with a mass of 6.00 g traveling at an initial speed of 896 m/s through a 1.25 kg block of wood. After passing through the block, the bullet exits at a speed of 435 m/s. Using the conservation of momentum equation, the speed of the block after the bullet passes through is calculated to be 2.56 m/s. This conclusion is reached by equating the momentum before and after the bullet's interaction with the block.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of conservation of momentum
  • Basic knowledge of mass and velocity units (grams and meters per second)
  • Familiarity with equations of motion
  • Ability to perform algebraic manipulations
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the conservation of momentum in elastic and inelastic collisions
  • Learn about kinetic energy calculations in collision scenarios
  • Explore the effects of friction on motion dynamics
  • Investigate real-world applications of momentum conservation in ballistics
USEFUL FOR

Physics students, educators, and professionals in engineering or ballistics who are interested in understanding the dynamics of motion and collisions involving projectiles.

A bullet with a mass of 6.00 g is fired through a 1.25 kg block of wood on a frictionless surface. The initial speed of the bullet is 896 m/s, and the speed of the bullet after it exits the block is 435 m/s. At what speed does the block move after the bullet passes through it?

For this one i thought that i would find the average velocity first but i can't do that without knowing the distance it traveled so i went back to square one.

Square one says conservation of momentum.
