Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of airplane harnesses and ultralight flying, including various models and personal experiences related to flying and safety equipment. Participants share their thoughts on the thrill and risks associated with such flying devices, as well as comparisons to other flying technologies.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express a desire to try flying with an airplane harness, while others are more cautious about the risks involved.
  • There is speculation about the classification of the harness as ultralight, with some participants questioning its safety during aerobatics.
  • Several participants discuss the appeal of Jet-man wings, with one expressing a preference for them over traditional harnesses.
  • Concerns are raised about the structural integrity of the harness during stunts, with a participant suggesting that a wing could snap off.
  • There is a humorous exchange about needing a twin rating for unconventional flying scenarios, such as flying with kangaroos.
  • Some participants share their imaginative thoughts about flying experiences, including diving through clouds and high-altitude skydiving.
  • One participant notes that the title of the thread was misleading, emphasizing that pilots "wear" their airplanes rather than just fly them.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of enthusiasm and caution regarding ultralight flying and the use of harnesses. There is no clear consensus on the safety or practicality of the discussed flying devices, and multiple competing views remain.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference various flying technologies and personal experiences, but there are unresolved questions about safety regulations and classifications for ultralights. The discussion includes speculative elements about flying experiences and safety concerns.

I wonder what its classed as, ultra-light? At first I was laughing as he put on the safty harness, thinking it would never save his life. But now I see it was to keep him in the plane{faints} with his dare devil stunts.
Wolly, you can have it, I'm staying on the ground for this one. I must admit, if I were 30 years younger, I might enjoy such a toy.

Yeah, I'd forget everything because I would have passed out.

Well, I'm impressed. It seemed quite stable. Personally, I'd like a little more wing surface.

I also notice at least two other ready for take off.

I'd prefer the Jet-man's (Yves Rossy) wings though.

Your title misled me about the topic. All pilots 'strap on' their aeroplane. As I've said before, you don't fly a plane; you wear it. This thing is pretty cool, but there's a jet version that Cyrus mentioned, as well as one that's essentially a jet version without the aeroplane as referenced by Ivan and Astro. What it comes down to is that anything that gets you off of the ground is good (well, not landmines...).

Or Kangaroos, would you need a twin rating for such a thing?

Nah, you must have nerves of steel just to get out of bed in the morning.

I don't have a problem with ultralights, but this thing seems as if a wing could snap off when he did those aerobatics.

For a kangaroo?

Every country has their own laws regarding licensing. I don't even know if there is such a thing as a multi-engine rating for ultralights.

Yeah - that's the dude. I'd do that in a heartbeat!

I thought about that this afternoon while flying from NY to ATL. I was just imagining diving through some of those high cumulonimbus clouds. :-p

I need to do some high altitude skydiving. :-p:-p

But what about the second video? Are you ready for take-offs and landings?

These are the adventures of Supernuc!

Reminds me of Robocop!

But he (Jean-Yves Blondeau) should not be on the sidewalk. He should be on the street - with the traffic.
