Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around understanding specific equations related to spherical harmonics and associated Legendre functions, particularly focusing on the manipulation of these equations. Participants seek clarification on the mathematical techniques used and resources for further study.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires whether the manipulation of equations is primarily algebraic or trigonometric in nature.
  • Another participant notes that a specific term was multiplied and divided by sin^(|m|) θ, prompting questions about the reasoning behind this manipulation.
  • There are requests for resources or examples to better understand the techniques involved in such manipulations.
  • Participants express uncertainty about the clarity of the equations referenced and the effectiveness of the provided image.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion remains unresolved, with participants expressing confusion about the equations and the methods used to manipulate them. There is no consensus on the nature of the mathematical techniques involved.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of clarity in the equations referenced and the dependence on the specific definitions of terms used in spherical harmonics and associated Legendre functions.

Hello,

Question is about equation 5.71 ---to-----5.72

All that was done is algebra or trigonometry?
Where do I find such more example or reading or exercises.

I apologize for not printing the actual equations, there were too many symbols in them.

Thanks.

Ok, so I was able to scan the book and put equation in the image.

Its is attached to this post.

Thanks

Well, you were able to scan most of the page. It's not clear which equations you are talking about, though.

I modified the image to make it clear. Please have a look.

He multiplied and divided each term of the sum by sin^(|m|) \theta.

Why he felt the need?
Where did he learn to manipulate equation like this? Or how can I learn it, is trigonometry or algebra?
