Can a Person Escape an Endless Fall Through Two Facing Portals?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a fictional scenario involving two facing portals that create an endless fall for a person. Participants explore the implications of such a situation, particularly focusing on the physics of perpetual motion and potential methods for escape.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the feasibility of a person falling indefinitely through two facing portals and wonders about the potential for escape without harm.
  • Another participant humorously references a cultural phrase, "The cake is a lie," which may imply skepticism about the scenario's premise.
  • A third participant expresses curiosity about the original question, indicating a desire for clarification on the topic.
  • A later reply suggests that the question cannot be addressed with current physics and proposes that gravity would cause the person to accelerate indefinitely, leaving the exploration of escape methods open to creative interpretation.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the question, and multiple competing views remain regarding the nature of the scenario and its implications within the realm of physics.

Contextual Notes

The discussion is limited by the fictional nature of the scenario and the constraints of mainstream physics, which do not support the premise of endless falls through portals.

So I'm just really curious and this question is fictional, I'm new so i don't know if this is the right place to post this. Anyway, if there is 2 portal facing each other vertically and a person jump on to it, end up falling forever, i wonders how much could that person reach and is there anyway to help him to get out if it without killing him?

The cake is a lie.

I'm even more curious about what you mean with this question :P

Hi Toby N, welcome to PF.

I'm sorry to say that your question is simply not one that we can answer with current physics and, as such, I am going to have to lock this thread since PF rules do not allow discussion of things which aren't part of mainstream science.

That being said, for simplicity's sake, I would assume gravity just acts downward and the person keeps accelerating and I leave it up to you to come up with some creative ways to get this person out of their perpetual fall.
