SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the feasibility of formulating calculus using infinitesimals without introducing a new number system, specifically non-standard analysis. Participants argue that such a formulation is impossible, as the concept of infinitesimals inherently requires the acceptance of new numbers, which contradicts the premise of adhering strictly to classical logic. The consensus is that rigorous calculus cannot incorporate infinitesimals without expanding the existing mathematical framework.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of classical calculus principles
  • Familiarity with non-standard analysis
  • Knowledge of formal mathematical logic
  • Basic concepts of infinitesimals in mathematics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the foundations of non-standard analysis
  • Explore the role of infinitesimals in modern calculus
  • Study classical logic and its implications in mathematical formulations
  • Investigate alternative approaches to calculus without infinitesimals
USEFUL FOR

Mathematicians, educators, and students interested in the philosophical and foundational aspects of calculus, particularly those examining the role of infinitesimals in mathematical theory.

Is there a formulation of calculus that uses infinitesimals rigorously without introducing an additional number system (non-standard analysis) and without deviating from classical logic?

I would say no, since dx, whatever it is, is not part of any formal system that you will probably accept.

How could this sentence possibly be satisfied? On the one hand, it's asking for new numbers (nonzero infinitessimals), but at the same time you reject introducing new numbers!
