Can Earth's Magnetism Be Harnessed for Aircraft Lift?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the feasibility of harnessing Earth's magnetism for aircraft lift. The participant, a meteorologist and pilot, explores the concept of using magnetic lift or electromagnetism in aircraft engines. However, it is concluded that the Earth's magnetic flux density, ranging from 25 to 65 microtesla, is too weak to be effective for generating lift in aircraft. Previous attempts to utilize Earth's magnetism for this purpose have been deemed impractical due to its insufficient strength.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electromagnetism principles
  • Familiarity with aircraft design and lift mechanisms
  • Knowledge of Earth's magnetosphere
  • Basic physics of magnetic fields
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of magnetic lift in aviation
  • Explore advanced electromagnetism applications in engineering
  • Investigate the properties of Earth's magnetosphere
  • Study alternative lift technologies in aircraft design
USEFUL FOR

Aerospace engineers, aviation enthusiasts, and researchers interested in innovative aircraft design and the application of electromagnetic principles in aviation.

Hello,
I have an idea i have been working on for some time. I am a meteorologist and pilot, and i love aviation, especially design. I have been playing with the idea of magnetic lift (as in when one magnet is repelled from another magnet) or electromagnetism in an engine, to create a different form of lift for an aircraft, and a more efficient engine. But what i have been thinking about recently is the magnetosphere and the magnetism of the earth. Unfortunately i know very little about both subjects. My question then, is can the magnetism in or around the Earth be used to create any sort of lift? or has it been tried before?

I won't bother with it. It is much too weak to matter for an aircraft lift.

The Earth's magnetic flux density ranges from 25 to 65 microtesla.
So as nasu said, it's a very weak field.
