SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the error encountered when using the rref(A) and ref(A) functions on a matrix with more entries than vectors on a TI-84 calculator. Users emphasize that the TI-84 Guidebook specifies that the number of columns must be greater than or equal to the number of rows for these functions to work correctly. The example matrix provided, consisting of three rows and two columns, violates this requirement, leading to the error. Participants recommend consulting the user manual for further clarification on matrix operations.

PREREQUISITES
 • Understanding of matrix dimensions and operations
 • Familiarity with TI-84 calculator functions
 • Knowledge of Reduced Row Echelon Form (RREF)
 • Basic linear algebra concepts
NEXT STEPS
 • Review the TI-84 Guidebook for matrix operation guidelines
 • Practice creating matrices with appropriate dimensions for RREF
 • Explore linear algebra textbooks for deeper insights into matrix theory
 • Learn about alternative calculators that handle matrix operations differently
USEFUL FOR

Students studying linear algebra, educators teaching matrix operations, and anyone using TI-84 calculators for mathematical computations.

Homework Statement

Let's say I have more entries than vectors and I put them in a matrix. Now for some reason when I put rref(A) or ref(A), it gives me an error. WHYY?

Can you give us an example? And what error does it output, exactly?

This is probably obvious, but according to the TI-84 Guidebook, when using ref( or rref(, "the number of columns must be greater than or equal to the number of rows."

What do you mean by "more entries than vectors"?

Let's say I have

\begin{bmatrix}
3 &1 \\
5&7 \\
1 &3
\end{bmatrix}

My Ti- gives me an error

Anyone...?

You didn't say what kind of TI calculator you have. According to eumyang, the TI 84 manual says that matrices must have more columns than rows. Have you looked at the user manual for your calculator?
