Does anybody have any tips/ advice on building a simple cyclotron? I read about Michio Kaku making an accelorater when he was a teen and was wondering how to make one.
Building a cyclotron at home is a complex and time-consuming endeavor, requiring significant expertise in engineering and electronics. The discussion emphasizes the importance of foundational knowledge, particularly from the original paper by Lawrence and Livingston and resources like Fred Niell's site and Rutgers University's cyclotron project. Key components include an oil diffusion pump or turbomolecular pump for vacuum, and a custom-designed vacuum chamber made from aluminum or 304 stainless steel. The consensus is that while the project is educational, it is not suitable as a hobby due to the high costs and technical challenges involved.
PREREQUISITESPhysics enthusiasts, engineering students, and hobbyists interested in advanced particle acceleration and vacuum technology.
