Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around recommendations for a digital voltmeter (DVM) and lab power supply that can connect to a PC, specifically for logging output and controlling the power supply based on terminal voltage or current. The focus is on finding off-the-shelf products, particularly from UK suppliers.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a need for a DVM and lab power supply that can connect to a PC for logging and control purposes.
  • Another participant suggests Agilent as a high-quality manufacturer of test equipment, noting their DVMs and power supplies can be programmed via GPIB, but mentions the high cost associated with these products.
  • Alternative products are proposed, including links to a specific power supply and multimeter from different suppliers, indicating a search for more affordable options.
  • One participant acknowledges the high cost of Agilent products but compares it favorably to a contractor's quote, indicating a desire to negotiate or find better pricing.
  • There is a mention of the GPIB connectors used by Agilent products, highlighting their compatibility for daisy chaining and programming ease with Agilent VEE.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the quality of Agilent products but express differing views on the cost and availability of alternatives. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best choice of equipment.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully explored the specifications or compatibility of the suggested alternatives, and there may be assumptions about the required features of the DVM and power supply that are not explicitly stated.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for individuals or professionals seeking recommendations for laboratory equipment that requires PC connectivity, particularly in the context of voltage and current monitoring and control.

I need an off the shelf DVM and Lab Power Supply that can be connected to a PC to firstly log the DVM output and secondly to Switch the PSU on and off dependent on the PSU terminal voltage/current.

I could do an internet search, but I have to get the spec out ASAP and haven't started it yet.

Does anybody know of/use this sort of kit, and can you point me to a Manufacturer/Supplier (Pref UK)

My first thought is "Agilent"

They make world's highest quality test equipment, including a bench DVM and power supplies that can be programmed via PC through a connection called GBIP. Their latest models can be programmed through a network now.

But they are very very expensive.

But here I found an alternative PS

and multimeter

hope that helps.

Thanks, I'd decided Agilent was the most likely supplier.
The 18A supply current means it ain't going to be cheap, but the £1200 price for the units I put together is still much cheaper then the £16k the contractor is saying it will cost. Time to put my Kicking boots on...

The other good thing about Agilent products is that they all use GPIB connectors (which can be daisy chained) and are easily programmed with Agilent VEE.
