Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the experience of interacting with ChatGPT in real-time, focusing on its voice features, capabilities, and limitations. Participants share their personal experiences, technical observations, and opinions about the nature of the AI's responses, touching on aspects of conversational AI, user interaction, and the underlying algorithms.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants describe the novelty of having a two-way verbal conversation with ChatGPT, noting its various voice options.
  • Concerns are raised about the AI's lack of true understanding, likening it to a calculator that processes language without comprehension.
  • Participants discuss the ability of ChatGPT to mimic accents, with some sharing humorous experiences of its impressions.
  • There are mentions of limitations in the voice feature, including token restrictions and the need for advanced mode access.
  • Some participants express skepticism about the AI's learning capabilities, arguing that it does not retain information long-term and merely responds based on patterns in data.
  • Others highlight the AI's ability to provide transcripts and the ease of interrupting it during conversations.
  • There are suggestions for additional voice personas that could enhance the experience.
  • Some participants share their preference for alternative AI models due to privacy concerns.
  • Discussions include the AI's performance in mathematical contexts, with claims that it does not process math in a traditional sense but rather predicts responses based on prior data.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of fascination and skepticism regarding ChatGPT's capabilities. While some appreciate its features and find humor in its interactions, others challenge the notion that it possesses understanding or perception, leading to an unresolved debate about the nature of its responses.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the AI's inability to retain long-term memory, the dependency on token availability for advanced features, and the unresolved nature of its mathematical processing capabilities.

It is admittedly a useful tool if used in moderation, with discipline and intelligence. On the other hand I read an article in a very serious Danish newspaper (Weekendavisen) where one person said (and I quote as closely as I dare): "[,,,] now I'm a person with my head up my a.. most of the time [...]", and he then went on to explain how he used it for interior decorating or some such...

Now admittedly, the graphic metaphor with the behind is part of Danish language, mainly used as a prerogative for a person being too introspective or scatterbrained, though usually it's something you say about others and really really not in a national newspaper. :woot:

EDIT:

One good example though: A woman used ChatGPT to write letters to her ex with no hooks for continuing a conflict as her ex pounced on every opportunity for that.

I tried explaining this to a ton of people but I'm getting nowhere. Sorry if I'm over-agreeing with you but I just found the thread and I really feel your "pain".

On the other hand, a lot of the people I talk to and about are really helped by ChatGPT due to e.g. dyslexia or other limitations. But yeah, they tend to anthropomorphize.
There is serious danger in anthropomorphizing AI behavior:

In two cases, parents filed lawsuits against Character.AI after their teenage children interacted with chatbots that claimed to be licensed therapists. After extensive use of the app, one boy attacked his parents and the other boy died by suicide....

Companies design entertainment chatbots such as Character.AI and Replika to keep users engaged for as long as possible, so their data can be mined for profit. To that end, bots give users the convincing impression of talking with a caring and intelligent human. But unlike a trained therapist, chatbots tend to repeatedly affirm the user, even if a person says things that are harmful or misguided.

...although I'm not certain anthropomorphizing is exactly the right word for what's discussed in my link. A chiropractor tends to be upfront that they're a chiropractor and not an orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist. Since "AI" is just riffing on what you say you want to hear, it is more like a "psychic". A knowing* fraud, not a well-meaning crackpot.

*oops, anthropomorphized; an un-knowing fraud. Er, well, the programmers know.

Haha, I thought I was the only one getting into actual conversations with ChatGPT! It’s wild how it sometimes feels more human than some customer service reps 😅

Out of curiosity, has anyone here fully built something using ChatGPT?

I ask because I actually created an entire transportation service website from scratch — all with ChatGPT’s help. From writing content and structuring pages to fine-tuning tone and making the UX feel smooth, it was like having a digital co-founder. The site’s live now and serves a limousine service in Germany — and honestly, I wouldn’t have pulled it off this fast without ChatGPT.

If AI keeps evolving like this, I can totally imagine a future where solo creators launch entire businesses in a weekend.

Has anyone else tried building real-world projects with it yet? Would love to hear your stories!

I have.

Entirely written by AI. All I did was tweak the text.

Wow Dave, that’s awesome — and honestly, your page reads super naturally for being AI-written with just tweaks. Love the minimalist vibe, and it’s cool how direct and clean your message is. 🎯

Quick question though — have you had a chance to check how it’s ranking on Google yet?

The reason I ask is that I checked out the page, and while the content is solid, there are a few SEO fundamentals that might be holding it back from hitting that coveted first page (things like meta optimization, structured data, image alt tags, page speed, and backlinks).

If you're open to it, I'd love to give you a free mini audit and show you what could be improved — no pressure at all, just value upfront. I specialize in helping solo creators like you get seen organically without throwing cash at ads.

Let me know if you're interested — happy to take a quick look and send over some suggestions! 🚀
