Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around calculating the yield of copper from bornite ore, specifically focusing on a homework problem involving the chemical reaction of bornite (Cu3FeS3) and its conversion to copper. The scope includes mathematical reasoning and problem-solving related to chemistry.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related, Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant presents a homework problem involving the yield of copper from bornite and describes their initial calculations regarding moles of bornite.
  • The same participant expresses uncertainty about the next steps in the calculation process.
  • Another participant questions the lack of responses to the initial inquiry, implying a desire for assistance.
  • A different participant asserts they have the knowledge to help but encourages the original poster to attempt answering the question themselves.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion does not show clear agreement or consensus, as participants express varying levels of engagement and support without resolving the initial question.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved mathematical steps and assumptions regarding the yield percentage and the stoichiometry of the reaction that may affect the final calculations.

Homework Statement

3) Bornite, Cu3FeS3, is an ore used in the production of copper. If 2.5kg of bornite produced a 60% yield, how much copper was collected?

2 Cu3FeS3(s) + 7 O2(g) ---> 6 Cu(s) + 2 FeO(s) + 6SO2(g)

The Attempt at a Solution

So first I calculated the moles of Cu3Fes3 and got about 7.3 moles. Then I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions?
