Circuits components and safety functions

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying fundamental circuit components and exploring safety functions in practical power circuits. It includes both theoretical aspects of circuit design and practical considerations regarding component functionality and safety measures.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests a list of fundamental circuit components and safety functions in power circuits.
  • Another participant questions the classification of "ground" and "power supply" as components, suggesting that a power supply is a collection of components rather than a single component.
  • A participant lists several components including diodes, capacitors, resistors, ground, transistors, and power supplies, but faces challenges regarding the classification of some items.
  • Further contributions clarify that while most listed items are components, the power supply serves a functional role rather than being a standalone component.
  • Additional components are suggested, such as switches, transformers, LEDs, potentiometers, integrated circuits, and fuses, with a note on the types of transistors present in the circuit.
  • There is a mention of FETs and MOSFETs as significant components not shown in the initial discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants exhibit disagreement regarding the classification of certain items as components, particularly the power supply and ground. There is no consensus on these classifications, and the discussion remains unresolved.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about what constitutes a component may vary among participants, and the definitions of terms like "power supply" and "ground" are not universally agreed upon.

5 fundamental circuit components or functions and what are some safety functions that are performed in most practical power circuits?

thanks:)

Can you name ANY of the components in the above circuit diagram?

diodes capacitor resistor ground transistor power supply

Ground is a component? When did 'power supply' become a component? It is a collection of components usually used to convert one type of electrical power into another.

well i know that.. i just decided to add that in...

Good.

Yes, all except the power supply are components.

The power supply is more like the function of the components in the lower circuit, just like the top circuit is an amplifier.

You could add switch, transformer, LED, potentiometer (also a trim pot which is often a screwdriver adjustment) , integrated circuit, electrolytic capacitor.

It would not be unusual to find a fuse in series with the power switch.

Note that some of the transistors are NPN while others are PNP. You can tell by which way the arrow is pointing on the emitter symbol. Q1 and Q4 are NPN and the others are PNP.

Not shown are FETs and MOSFETs which are also important.

ok thanks for the help.. :) big time...
