SUMMARY

The discussion centers on recommendations for classic German textbooks in Physics and Mathematics, specifically targeting undergraduate levels. The highlighted work is "Vorlesungen über Theoretische Physik" by Arnold Sommerfeld, noted for its exceptional explanations of mathematical methods in theoretical physics, particularly in Volume VI, which focuses on partial differential equations (PDEs). The text is recognized for its historical significance, as many Nobel Prize winners were Sommerfeld's students. The conversation also touches on the availability of these texts in the open domain.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with theoretical physics concepts
  • Understanding of partial differential equations (PDEs)
  • Basic knowledge of German language, particularly in scientific terminology
  • Awareness of historical context in physics education
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the availability of "Vorlesungen über Theoretische Physik" by Arnold Sommerfeld in open domain
  • Study the mathematical methods used in theoretical physics
  • Learn German scientific terminology specific to physics and mathematics
  • Explore other classic German textbooks in theoretical physics and their authors
USEFUL FOR

Students and educators in physics and mathematics, particularly those interested in classic German literature in these fields, as well as anyone looking to enhance their understanding of German scientific terminology.

I wonder if the German speaking members have recommendation to classic German textbooks or writings in Physics and Mathematics. I prefer undergraduate level but you can of course share other important works. I am also interested in learning German physics and mathematical terms since they have very small similarities to English. My German reading level is quite I good in that I can understand most of general texts already.

Thank You

In my opinion the best textbooks on theoretical physics ever written are

Sommerfeld, Vorlesungen über Theoretische Physik

Although in some points a bit old fashioned (e.g., in using the "ict convention" in relativity) they are just marvelous in explaining the mathematical methods as applied to theoretical physics. Particularly Vol. VI on PDE's is just marvelous.

Note that a lot of later Nobel Prize winners were Sommerfeld's students!

Seems very interesting, has this book been available in open domain or does it still remain proprietary?
