Comparing Vectors: Orientation vs. Direction

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the concepts of orientation and direction in the context of vectors. Participants explore whether these two notions are equivalent or if there are significant differences between them.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions if orientation (determined by the angle) is the same as direction.
  • Another participant asserts that the direction of a vector is quantified by the angle it makes with a reference axis.
  • A third participant expresses confusion, suggesting there may be a major difference between orientation and direction.
  • A later reply challenges the need for a different definition of direction, implying it aligns with the angle.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion remains unresolved, with differing views on whether orientation and direction are the same or distinct concepts.

Hi, I'm learning vectors and there's two notions which I don't distinguish :

Is the orientation of a vector (determined by the angle it has) the same thing as the direction of a vector ?

thank you

Yes. The direction of the vector is quantified by the angle it makes with some reference axis.

Ok, I thouht that there was a major difference between the two of them. thank you

Well, how else would you define the direction of a vector?
