Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of creating artificial islands using floating metallic structures without soil. Participants explore the concept of building large floating platforms and their potential applications, including military uses.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant proposes the idea of creating artificial islands using hexagonal metallic blocks that float and can be attached together.
  • Another participant mentions existing artificial islands, citing Japan's Kansai Airport as an example, but expresses skepticism about the feasibility of building without soil.
  • A participant questions whether a floating structure can be classified as an island if it does not incorporate natural materials from the ocean floor.
  • Concerns are raised about the lack of current projects of this nature, with one participant speculating that cost and necessity may be significant factors.
  • There is a suggestion that floating military bases could be a potential application of such structures, although another participant points out that aircraft carriers already serve a similar purpose and highlight legal considerations regarding international waters.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the feasibility and classification of artificial islands, with no consensus reached on the practicality of building such structures without soil or the reasons for their absence in current projects.

Contextual Notes

Participants note limitations related to cost, necessity, and legal restrictions regarding the construction and operation of floating structures in international waters.

hey was wondering :

Is it possible today to create a sort of artificial island without soil :
Like you have Big metalic Hexagonal blocks with air inside them (that float), that you attach together ? and then that you can have a big surface at sea where u can build on

I can't say that you can do it without soil. However, artificial islands are in use for some very crucial things. Look at Japan's Kansai Airport.

It's certainly possible to build something large that floats; I just don't know if it can be considered an island unless it's built up from the ocean floor and contains 'natural' materials such as rocks and sand.

But why isn't anything of the sort being made ?

I mean you could build everything on a floating metalic structure, and add some soil to make it look better for other people ?

i would imagine them well as floating millitary bases that could be draged close to the country you want to attack , ect
with all the munitions, tools, ect onboard

I would imagine two reasons; cost and need.

We already pretty much have that with aircraft carriers. Plus there is always the fact of having to stay in international waters or getting permission from other countries to enter their territories.
