Homework Statement



A student pushes horizontally eastward on a 1.2kg textbook initially reasting 1.3m from the edge of a long table. The coefficient os static friction is 0.24 and the coeficient of kinetic friction is 0.18. The force is just large enough to get the book to start moving, and is maintained for 1.0s.

a) Determine the acceleration of the book while the student is applying the push.
b) Calculate the maximum velocity reached by the book.

The Attempt at a Solution



For A: I calculated Fk = 2.16

So since Fn = ma = Fk

a = Fk/m
a= 2.16/1.2
a= 1.8 m/s^2

But it's not the right answer. Can someone point of my mistake.

The answer at the back of the book is 0.59 m/s^2.

What formula would I use the find acceleration. Is it Fn=ma?
