I am in high school and am really bad at drawing and want to know if you have to be good at hand drawing and designing at civil engineering?
Hand-drawing skills are not essential for a career in civil engineering, as most drawings are created using CAD software like AutoCAD. While introductory art or drawing classes can enhance sketching abilities, the primary focus should be on understanding engineering drawings and CAD techniques. Skills in freehand drawing and basic drafting are beneficial for communication and idea development, but they are not the core requirement for civil engineering roles. The profession emphasizes practical application over artistic skill, with a strong reliance on technology for design and documentation.
PREREQUISITESThis discussion is beneficial for high school students considering a career in civil engineering, aspiring civil engineers, and professionals seeking to understand the role of drawing skills in engineering practices.
Yes,be sure to take a CAD course in your first year. AutoCad seems to be the common one in these parts for Civils, although any sort of CAD program will suffice. You may not be skilled in manual drafting, but be sure to understand the basic plan, side, elevation, isometric, and Section views. Best wishes in your studies.Plus, as a working Engineer, you do most of your drawings (mechanical, electrical, civil, etc.) with a CAD system anyway.
