Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the behavior of flow velocity in an air ringmain piping system, particularly whether the flow velocity decreases with each outlet. The scope includes practical considerations related to flow control and system design.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions if the flow velocity decreases at each outlet in the ringmain system.
  • Another participant seeks clarification on whether the outlets are open or closed, indicating that this may affect flow dynamics.
  • A participant notes that the outlets have flow control valves (orifices), suggesting that flow can be manipulated at each outlet.
  • It is proposed that flow could potentially increase by induction when passing an open outlet, although this remains speculative.
  • A later reply expresses concern about ensuring adequate flow at the furthest outlets from the compressor, indicating a practical challenge in maintaining consistent flow throughout the system.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on whether flow velocity decreases with each outlet, and multiple viewpoints regarding the effects of outlet configuration and flow control remain present.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify the assumptions regarding flow characteristics or the specific configurations of the piping system, which may influence the outcomes.

Hi All,

Quick question about the flow velocity in an air ringmain piping system. does the flow velocity in the ringmain pipe decrease every time it passes an outlet?

Engineering news on Phys.org
Is the "outlet" closed or open?

there are numerous outlets which each have a flow control valve (an orifice)

So, in principle flow can be increased by induction going past an open "outlet?"

Apologies for the late reply.

Yes, the flow can be adjusted at each outlet to suit the users requirements. I have to provide the same flow at each outlet around the ring main system, my worry is that the furthest outlets from the compressor won't receive enough flow.
