Doubt from second law of thermodynamics

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the interpretation of ΔS in the context of the second law of thermodynamics, specifically its application in the Gibbs free energy equation. ΔS represents the change in entropy of the system, not the surroundings or the universe. The entropy of the system is the primary focus when calculating Gibbs free energy, as it directly influences thermodynamic processes. The concept of the universe's entropy is deemed inappropriate for practical applications in this context.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of thermodynamic laws
  • Familiarity with Gibbs free energy equation
  • Basic knowledge of entropy concepts
  • Knowledge of system vs. surroundings in thermodynamics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the implications of the second law of thermodynamics
  • Learn about the Gibbs free energy equation in detail
  • Explore the relationship between system and surroundings in thermodynamics
  • Investigate advanced entropy concepts and their applications
USEFUL FOR

Students of thermodynamics, physicists, chemists, and anyone interested in understanding the principles of entropy and its role in thermodynamic equations.

qrev/T = ΔS

here what does ΔS signify?does it mean change in entropy of system or surroundings?

how is entropy of system, surrounding and universe related to each other and which entropy is used in gibbs free energy equation?

Delta S is usually the entropy of the system, if not otherwise stated. Specifically, in the Gibbs equation it is the entropy of the system. Personally, I don't think it is appropriate to speak of the entropy of the universe as a whole.
