High energies are necessary to break particles into their constituents due to the strong force that binds them together, which requires significant energy to overcome. This force is much stronger than electromagnetic interactions, making it challenging to separate particles without high-energy collisions. Additionally, observing fine structure involves probing the internal details of particles, which also demands high energy to resolve these features. The discussion emphasizes the relationship between energy levels and the ability to manipulate and observe fundamental particles. Understanding these principles is crucial for grasping advanced concepts in particle physics.

Homework Statement

explain why high energies are required to break particles into their constituents and to see fine structure

this is a point on the syllabus and I can't find an answer in the book

The Attempt at a Solution

Physics news on Phys.org
is it that the "strong force" holds constituent particles together
thus very high forces are needed to separate them?

this is the only point on the syllabus I don't quite get
could someone please run me through the main principles

thanks

The book claims the answer is that all the magnitudes are the same because "the gravitational force on the penguin is the same". I'm having trouble understanding this. I thought the buoyant force was equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. Weight depends on mass which depends on density. Therefore, due to the differing densities the buoyant force will be different in each case? Is this incorrect?
