Electromagnet project - questions

Hey. I'm doing a summative project for my physics class in which I'll build a fairly strong electromagnet and see how different amounts of current affects the force it's able to exert. A few questions: What is the best core material to use? Also, does it matter what I use to separate the coil from the core? If so, what should I use?
