AI Thread Summary
A rainstorm dropped 1.7 cm of rain over a city measuring 6.0 km by 8.0 km, leading to calculations of water volume. The total volume of rain calculated was 81,600 m³, which converts to 81,600,000,000 cm³, equating to 81,600,000 kg. The confusion arose regarding the conversion of kilograms to metric tons, with the correct conversion being 1 metric ton equal to 1,000 kg. The final calculation yielded approximately 81,600 metric tons of water fell on the city. The discussion highlighted the importance of accurate unit conversions in solving volume-related problems.

A violent rainstorm dumps 1.7 cm of rain on a city 6.0 km wide and 8.0 km long in a 3.0 hr period. How many metric tons (1 ton = 103 kg) of water fell on the city? [1 cm3 of water has a mass of 1 g = 10-3 kg.]

any help would be greatly apreciated!

Think about defining density.

1.7 cm =.017m=thickness
Width =6 km =6000m
length = 8 km =8000 m

t0al volume = .017 x 6000 x 8000
=81600 m^3
=81600 x (100 cm)3
=81600 x 1000000 cm^3
=81600000000 cm3

since 1cm^3 = 1 gram

81600000000 cm^3 = 81600000000 gm =81600000 kg

since 1 metric ton =103 kg
81600000 kg = 81600000 kg / 103 kg =

792233.09 metric ton

i hope this is right.

hey! thanks allot for the information
but i tried that answer and it said its wrong :frown:
oh well don't worry i'll keep on tryin because I'm at work here
and i have other online problems to do also though

It's much too much information! It is better suggest steps to take than simply solve the problem for him.

Not where I come from it isn't!:bugeye:

Is that some new "pi=3" Kansas law passed?

1 metric ton or tonne is 1000 kg. I think you calcs may be correct now.

Yeah that why I was confised.. haha I was like " when did 103 kg became = 1 metric ton.." hahha
Since it was in teh question I used it...
anyway the answer should be..

81600000 kg / 1000 kg = 81600 Ton
