Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the excitation of whispering gallery modes in a resonator and the challenges associated with coupling these modes through coaxial cables. Participants explore methods to enhance coupling while considering the implications for the quality factor (Q) of the cavity.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • One participant reports achieving modes at 9.87 GHz and 11.29 GHz but notes low coupling and seeks advice on improving it.
  • Another participant suggests that better coupling may reduce the Q of the cavity and questions the dimensions of the probe entering the cavity.
  • A suggestion is made to remove the shield and connect the probe tip directly to the wall to form a coupling loop antenna.
  • Participants discuss the difference between coupling with a loop (magnetic field) versus a probe (electric field) and how this affects resonance modes.
  • Concerns are raised about the trade-off between coupling efficiency and the Q factor, with one participant noting that good coupling typically implies a matched load, which may lead to a lower Q.
  • Questions are posed about minimizing insertion loss and the various factors that influence coupling efficiency.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the relationship between coupling and the Q factor, indicating that the discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approach to enhance coupling without adversely affecting the cavity's performance.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully defined the assumptions regarding the dimensions of the coupling elements or the specific configurations being discussed, leaving some aspects of the technical arguments open to interpretation.

Hello,I have built a resonator which needs to produce whispering gallery mode and coupled threw coaxial cables .
I got a mode at 9.87z and at 11.29Ghz.
But its coupling is very low .
How can I increase the coupling to this mode?
Thanks.

I assume you are referring to coupling of the input cable, and output cable, to the cavity. Better coupling may reduce the Q of the cavity.

You show the shield entering into the cavity with only a small probe exposed. How did you select those dimensions?

I would consider removing the shield and connecting the tip of the probe to the wall. That would form a small coupling loop antenna.

Hello,Could you please draw what you mean in general?
How down it helpes with achieving good coupling?

(a) If you use a loop, you are coupling with the magnetic field.
(b) If you use a probe, you are coupling with an electric field.

Higher currents can be induced in the cavity walls. Depending on the orientation of the loop, you can excite different modes of resonance.

Ain't that always the way? Good coupling implies a matched load which will produce a low Q. A high Q system must only pass a small amount of power. It's horses for courses I would say.

Do you mean to minimise insertion loss? That would imply matching the source and load. There are a lot of variables, I think.
