Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around seeking ideas for a 36-hour hackathon focused on societal impact. Participants share their experiences, inquire about rules and examples of past projects, and suggest potential project ideas that balance creativity with medium coding complexity.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests ideas for a hackathon project that is useful for society.
  • Another participant asks for clarification on the hackathon's rules and examples of previous projects.
  • Several participants share links to resources and past hackathon projects for inspiration.
  • Some participants discuss the theme of a recent hackathon and suggest that it may provide creative ideas.
  • One participant lists various project ideas, including an AI bot for recognizing facial expressions, basic physics simulations, and a smart recipe generator, while emphasizing the importance of originality.
  • There is a discussion about the abbreviation "TN," with participants clarifying that it refers to Tamil Nadu, a state in India, and suggesting the need for clarity in communication given the forum's audience.
  • A participant expresses gratitude for the assistance received but notes they were not selected for the hackathon.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of creativity in hackathon projects, but there is no consensus on specific ideas that would guarantee selection. The discussion includes multiple perspectives on project themes and requirements.

Contextual Notes

Some participants mention the need for clarity regarding the hackathon's rules and whether hardware is provided, indicating potential limitations in understanding the event's logistics.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in hackathons, particularly those looking for project ideas or insights into the hackathon experience, may find this discussion valuable.

its my first 36 hr hackathon. before that i participated in a 2hr hackathon of designing frontend wrb development

Can you give a link to the rules?

you can take a look at some of the projects made in the hackathons in hack club - https://hackclub.com/hackathons/.
If you are under 18 (though I doubt it, looking at the poster), and like hackathons, I suggest you also join Hack club! They run a lot of events all across India, and you could even join the organising team. I'm on the team for my local area. What part of India are you from? I have friends/relatives who are organisers in the North so I can get you an organising status potentially if you'd like.

Most of the examples will probably be from the most recent Hackathon in which the theme was "useless", I've just realised. You might be able to gather some inspiration though nonetheless. If you'd like some specific ideas which I've seen from the hackathons I've organised, feel free to DM me!

Can you give me some ideas which will get definitely shortlisted in the selection roung it must be creative but the coding complexity must be medium

Never mind - it's only for under 18s. By organising status I just meant that you could join the team of people who organise hackathons for hack club in that area.

I can't give you any guarantees for things that'll get shortlisted, because I'm not a judge, not to mention I've never run a 36 hour hackathon (only 12 hour ones), but here are some of the projects which we've had over the years that have really caught my eye:
  • One team I've seen before trained an AI bot to recognise facial expressions, and then rates your happiness
  • Collection of basic physics simulations (e.g. pendulum, double pendulum (less basic but still), mass on a spring)
  • Autocorrecter that purposely corrects words to something rude, and makes sentences that insults you (though this is obviously not very useful)
  • A computer that explodes when you make a syntax error (god knows how they debugged/tested it)
  • Smart Recipe generator - takes in some ingredients and spits out a recipe for a meal you could make
  • A really gameified anki addon - I don't know if you've heard of anki but it's essentially a flashcards app and you can code addons to add to it via python modules. In this case, they turned reviewing flashcards into a full blown game.
  • Annoying scheduler - sets the most annoying alarms to wake you up in the morning (and requires proof you've woken up in order to stop) - only lets you access social media once you've proven with a picture that you've finished certain tasks/goals for that day (e.g. going outside for a walk, finished maths homework)
If you'd like some more ideas, do tell me! But do remember that the fun of a hackathon is making something novel and new, so don't just use ideas off the internet - try and make something creative and fun, even if it's not that useful - that's what people like!

It might be wise to keep in mind that the forum is in the USA and most participants are in the USA, so if you are going you use abbreviations from India, best you spell them out on this forum.

True. The only reason I knew what it abbreviated to is because my parents are Indian so I am familiar with such shortenings.
Also - another thing about the hackathon - do they require you to bring your own hardware or are they providing it, @geekynerd ?
