Fixing a Door Problem After Carpet Installation

The room had new carpets installed and its a bit too long as a result it's hard to close the door. What can I do to make the door easier to close?

This is the right solution. Sometimes the door might also have room at the top and the hinges can be adjusted up some... but that's a bit rare... usually planing of some form is needed.

What is planing how do you do it?

You basically just shave bits of wood off the door with a plane reducing the height of the door.

What is planing how do you do it?

With the door still hung...place a pencil mark at the point (as close to the floor as possible) that you estimate will clear the carpet.

Remove the door and (using a straight edge square) lightly draw a line with your pencil through your mark across the width of the door.

If you have a planing tool, the line will be your control...shave a little (all the way across) and re-hang (a few times) to test and until it works.

This is an alternative method (if it's an inexpensive door...or if you don't have a planing tool or need to cut more than 1/4 inch). Lay the door flat on 2 saw horses, get a circular saw (and assistance to hold the door from moving...be very careful) and cut along the outside edge (closest to the bottom...be careful to cut straight and not too much) and be prepared to cut all the way across...don't stop and start. Once the cut is made, re-hang and test. Use a wood file or sand paper to clean the edge...use a downward motion on the door to prevent splintering.
