Flux from an infinite charged sheet

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on calculating the electric flux through a cone intersecting an infinite charged sheet with charge density sigma. The problem requires precise definitions of parameters such as "H," "R," and "2R," as well as clarity on whether the cone is finite or infinite. Participants emphasize the importance of understanding the geometry of the cone and its intersection with the sheet to accurately determine the flux. The need for clear diagrams and exact problem statements is highlighted to facilitate effective problem-solving.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electric flux and Gauss's Law
  • Knowledge of charge density concepts, specifically sigma
  • Familiarity with geometric properties of cones and their intersections
  • Ability to interpret and analyze diagrams in physics problems
NEXT STEPS
  • Study Gauss's Law applications in electrostatics
  • Learn about electric field lines from infinite charged sheets
  • Investigate geometric properties of cones in relation to electric fields
  • Review examples of flux calculations through various shapes
USEFUL FOR

I suspect that this is not the exact text of the original problem statement. can you quote it exactly and provide images of any included diagrams? What other parameters are involved?

Assume all the necessary parameters given

Still not clear. What does "H imply? What does the "R" and "2R" imply? Is the cone infinite or finite? Please present the problem precisely.

The way I read it, the cone is halfway through the sheet, and since its base radius is R it intersects the sheet to form a circle radius R/2. Or perhaps that should be 2R and R respectively- it is not clear from the diagram whether R and 2R are radii or diameters.

First, think what the lines of flux from the sheet look like.
