Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the use of a specific programming language or software for typing out mathematical formulae, particularly in the context of online forums and applications like MS Word. Participants explore how to use this language on the forums and its integration into other software.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the language used for typing formulae on the forums and how to apply it effectively.
  • Another participant provides links to resources about LaTeX, suggesting it as the language in question.
  • A suggestion is made to use TexAide, a freeware program, for integrating formulae into forum posts, with specific instructions on how to format the code using tags.
  • Further clarification is provided on the formatting of the code required for posting formulae, emphasizing the need to use specific tags.
  • One participant expresses skepticism about the need to integrate LaTeX into MS Word, suggesting that once familiar with LaTeX, users may prefer to write entire documents in LaTeX instead.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the utility of LaTeX for typing formulae, but there is no consensus on the necessity of integrating it into MS Word, with differing opinions on the best approach to document creation.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding the assumptions about participants' familiarity with LaTeX and the specific requirements for using it on the forums, as well as the potential challenges in integrating it with other software like MS Word.

On these forums, and in some of my online assignments, people have been using some sort of program or language to type out formulae.

1) What language is this?
2) How do I use this language on the forums? I know the general language, just not how to apply it here.
3) Is there any way to get it (or something similar) to work in MS-Word?

You can also use TexAide, also available from Design Science (#3 in the previous list, the one which offers MathType). TexAide is freeware. If you use the TexAide, then when you paste your expressions or formulas into your message, you need to surround the copied code with tags:

[tex ] [ /tex]

... but without the spaces seen in that line of demonstration.

What I really mean is something like -----

As for 3), once you get to work with \LaTeX and develop some skills with it, I doubt you will want to insert your LaTeX expressions into MS Word, instead of just writing the whole document in LaTeX
