Ground for a Van de Graaff Generator?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the grounding of a Van de Graaff generator, specifically whether a certain point in a provided image serves as the ground for the device. Participants explore the concept of grounding in relation to the generator's design and functionality.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions if a specific point in the image is the ground for the Van de Graaff generator and whether a wire could serve the same purpose as a discharging sphere.
  • Another participant asserts that the point in question is the attachment point for the ball and suggests that Van de Graaff generators do not have grounds in the same way batteries do, but acknowledges that the point can be used for grounding if desired.
  • A third participant mentions that Van de Graaff generators typically have a three-prong plug with the housing connected to the ground prong.
  • A later reply indicates understanding of the previous points without introducing new claims.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the concept of grounding in relation to Van de Graaff generators, with no consensus reached on whether the specific point is definitively the ground.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not clarify the implications of grounding in practical applications or the specific definitions of grounding in the context of Van de Graaff generators.

I attached a jpeg of a Van De Graaff generator off the web. Is the point in the photo the Van De Graaff ground? Suppose I have a wire coming out of that slot instead of a discharging sphere, would that hole still be the Van De Graaff ground?

It is the attachment point for the ball.
Van de Graff generators don't have "grounds" anymore than batteries do.
But if you wish, you can use that point to ground the device.

They do have a three prong plug with the housing attached to the third prong (ground).

Ok, I got it. All good.
