SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the dynamics of a carriage pulled by multiple horses, specifically 4-5 horses exerting different forces while maintaining a constant velocity. The user seeks resources to understand the cooperation and synchronization of the horses, which is governed by the dynamical equations of the system. Key mechanisms mentioned include the whippletree, singletree, and doubletree, which are essential for even distribution of pull among the horses. The user is directed to specific resources, including a Wikipedia page and a book excerpt that detail these mechanisms.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of classical mechanics and dynamics
  • Familiarity with the concepts of force distribution in multi-body systems
  • Knowledge of harnessing mechanisms such as whippletrees and singletrees
  • Basic principles of equilibrium and motion in mechanical systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the mechanics of whippletrees and their role in force distribution
  • Study the dynamics of multi-body systems in classical mechanics
  • Explore the principles of synchronization in cooperative systems
  • Investigate the mathematical modeling of forces in equine-drawn vehicles
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineers, equine enthusiasts, physics students, and anyone interested in the dynamics of multi-horse carriage systems.

hi !

I am assigned a project for which I need to look at the detailed dynamics of a carriage drawn by multiple horses, i.e., 4-5 horses drawing a carriage of finite mass, but not all of the horses are using the same force. But still there are some constraints (such as, through the yoke connecting the horses etc.) which make the entire system move at a constant velocity (most of the time). So, how this co-operation and synchronization is carried out should be clear from the dynamical equations of the system. I was told that a detailed study has been carried out regarding this matter. I tried to google with different keywords, but still no success. As I am a EE graduate, I might be missing some very common resources of physics or mechanics where this might be readily available. Can anybody please point me to some of those resources?

Thanks in advance

I don’t know “how this co-operation and synchronization is carried out should be clear from the dynamical equations of the system.”

But, horses are harnessed to a whippletree. Each horse is harnessed to a singletree and a pair to a doubletree. To even the pull you adjust the length from centre for the horses. (f*d)
