Help finding plans for a simple rankine cycle

AI Thread Summary
A novice is seeking guidance on building a simple closed-loop Rankine cycle to generate electricity, specifically for powering a light bulb. The discussion highlights the challenges of constructing a turbine, emphasizing the risks associated with high-pressure steam. Alternatives, such as a velocity turbine, are suggested, which involve heating a fluid to build pressure before using a nozzle to convert it to velocity. Participants encourage DIY enthusiasts to research materials and designs available online, asserting that anyone can build a Rankine cycle with sufficient information. The conversation underscores the importance of safety and proper planning in such projects.

Hello,

I am a complete novice and would like to build a simple closed loop rankine cycle that generate electricy, even if it only enough to power a light bulb. I want to learn more about thermal energy conversion in a hands on way, but I am having trouble finding any simple, easy to follow instructions online detailing how to go about building something like this:

a heat source applied to a working fluid, which then boils to turn a small turbine before being routed to a radiator, where it gives off its heat. then compressed and sent back to the heat source.

Like I said, i am novice and would prefer not to catch a face full of hot steam, so I would love some detailed instructions.

Anyone have a link to a project they really liked? or a book? something, anything really.

Thanks

You probably won't be able to build a good one. Turbines tend to run on high pressure gradients, which in other recent thread; pressure, steam and someone not knowing what they are doing is a bad combination. You could however build something slightly different. Which is based on a velocity turbine. You heat the fluid to build pressue, then use a nozzle to convert the pressure to velocity.
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbine for different turbine types.

There are many DIY non engineers making simple rankine cycles. You can build anything you put your mind to build. Just research what materials will work best for the intended heat and expected pressures. You have access to everything you need via google. Build your own turbine if you like. There are a lot of different designs and plans out there. No degree required I assure you.

Thread 'I need a concave mirror with a focal length length of 150 feet'
I need to cut down a 3 year old dead tree from top down so tree causes no damage with small pieces falling. I need a mirror with a focal length of 150 ft. 12" diameter to 36" diameter will work good but I can't think of any easy way to build it. Nothing like this for sale on Ebay. I have a 30" Fresnel lens that I use to burn stumps it works great. Tree service wants $2000.
Hi all, i have some questions about the tesla turbine: is a tesla turbine more efficient than a steam engine or a stirling engine ? about the discs of the tesla turbine warping because of the high speed rotations; does running the engine on a lower speed solve that or will the discs warp anyway after time ? what is the difference in efficiency between the tesla turbine running at high speed and running it at a lower speed ( as fast as possible but low enough to not warp de discs) and: i...
