Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the challenges faced by a participant who feels overwhelmed by physics concepts, primarily due to a background in popular science literature. The conversation explores various resources and approaches to learning physics, including the transition from introductory texts to more advanced materials, as well as the importance of mathematical foundations. It also touches on differences in educational terminology between the UK and the US.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses frustration with their limited understanding of physics despite a high IQ and a background in popular science, seeking guidance on how to progress.
  • Another suggests looking for intermediate reading materials, such as Asimov's introductions, to bridge the gap between popular science and more rigorous physics texts.
  • Some participants emphasize the necessity of a solid mathematical background, particularly in calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra, before tackling advanced physics topics.
  • There is a discussion about the differences in educational systems, with participants clarifying that "college" in the UK refers to a different educational stage than in the US, where it often refers to institutions that provide undergraduate education.
  • One participant notes the importance of not taking popular science books at face value, acknowledging that scientific theories are models subject to change and not absolute truths.
  • Several participants encourage the original poster to ask questions and engage with the community rather than feeling discouraged, suggesting that patience and gradual learning are key.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of a strong mathematical foundation for understanding physics and the challenges of self-study without formal instruction. However, there are varying opinions on the best resources and approaches to learning, indicating that multiple competing views remain.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights the limitations of relying solely on popular science literature for understanding complex physics concepts and the need for a structured approach to learning, including the acquisition of necessary mathematical skills.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be useful for individuals transitioning from popular science to more rigorous physics study, particularly those seeking guidance on educational resources and the importance of mathematics in physics learning.

You don't nunderstand. We payed, meaning we're at a superior level, she is nice enugh not to do that to her equals. However, certain penguins that don't pay are a completely different story

FeynmanMH42,

We have a number of introductory tutorials in mathematics and physics
https://www.physicsforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=151

You'll find some links to on-line courses and course notes.

Besides that, we have homework sections and the forum sections where we discuss numerous topics in math, physics and other sciences.

Cheers!

I think yomamma just compared himself to Evo...

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

you're a funny one there

Well, I'm alright with trigonometry, geometry, algebra and differentiation (haven't got round to teaching myself integration yet.) I learned most of it by myself because the education system in Britain is crap. :-p
In terms of physics, I think I know special relativity, A BIT of quantum theory (I know the basics but don't know the equations) and quite a bit of classical physics.
