SUMMARY

This discussion centers on the challenges faced by a beginner in physics who primarily relies on popular science literature and struggles to grasp foundational concepts. Participants recommend transitioning from introductory texts like Feynman's lectures to more structured resources, emphasizing the importance of mastering classical mechanics and electromagnetism (E&M) before tackling quantum mechanics. Key texts suggested include "Modern Quantum Mechanics" by J.J. Sakurai and "Physical Chemistry" by Donald McQuarrie. Additionally, a solid understanding of calculus and linear algebra is essential for success in physics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of classical mechanics
  • Familiarity with electromagnetism (E&M)
  • Proficiency in calculus and differential equations
  • Knowledge of linear algebra
NEXT STEPS
  • Study "Modern Quantum Mechanics" by J.J. Sakurai
  • Read "Physical Chemistry" by Donald McQuarrie
  • Learn calculus of several variables
  • Master linear algebra using "Linear Algebra" by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for students transitioning from popular science to formal physics education, particularly those preparing for university-level physics courses and seeking guidance on foundational mathematical skills.

You don't nunderstand. We payed, meaning we're at a superior level, she is nice enugh not to do that to her equals. However, certain penguins that don't pay are a completely different story

FeynmanMH42,

We have a number of introductory tutorials in mathematics and physics
https://www.physicsforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=151

You'll find some links to on-line courses and course notes.

Besides that, we have homework sections and the forum sections where we discuss numerous topics in math, physics and other sciences.

Cheers!

I think yomamma just compared himself to Evo...

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

you're a funny one there

Well, I'm alright with trigonometry, geometry, algebra and differentiation (haven't got round to teaching myself integration yet.) I learned most of it by myself because the education system in Britain is crap. :-p
In terms of physics, I think I know special relativity, A BIT of quantum theory (I know the basics but don't know the equations) and quite a bit of classical physics.
