SUMMARY

To design a powerful electromagnet, utilize a U-shaped piece of iron and enamelled copper wire, ensuring the magnetic field forms a closed loop. A 1.5V DC battery serves as the input source. The design must avoid air gaps to maintain strong magnetic attraction and repulsion forces. Measuring the forces can be achieved by assessing the electromagnet's ability to lift various objects.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electromagnetism principles
  • Familiarity with materials like enamelled copper wire and iron
  • Knowledge of circuit design for DC power sources
  • Ability to measure magnetic forces and field strength
NEXT STEPS
  • Research techniques for calculating magnetic field strength in electromagnets
  • Learn about the effects of air gaps on magnetic force
  • Explore different configurations of electromagnet designs
  • Investigate methods for measuring the lifting capacity of electromagnets
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, hobbyists, and students interested in electromagnet design and applications, particularly those looking to create efficient and powerful electromagnets for various projects.

Help in designing a small yet very powerful electromagnet!

I was wondering what are the major things I should concentrate in creating a strong electromagnet?
What are the best materials to use?
The input source I'm going to use is a 1.5V dc battery.

What do you all recommend?
+ How can I measure the forces it can apply?
Attraction + Repulsion?

Much appreciated!

You need a piece of iron and some enamelled copper wire. To make it strong the magnetic field has to be in a closed loop. That means - don't use an iron rod, use a U shaped piece of iron, wind some wire around it and have both ends of the U shape touch the object you want to lift. That way the magnetic field lines are completely inside the iron. If the field has to cross an air gap, the attractive force can be weakened by a huge factor.
