How can we boil water without heating it?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of boiling water without applying heat, exploring various methods and definitions related to boiling. Participants examine the implications of pressure changes and vacuum conditions on the boiling point of water.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question the definition of boiling and what it means for a liquid to be "boiling."
  • One participant suggests creating a vacuum as a method to boil water without heating it.
  • Another participant recounts an experiment involving boiling water with an ice cube, describing a process where water vapor is created by boiling, followed by a vacuum effect that induces boiling again when cooled.
  • It is noted that pressure plays a significant role in determining the boiling point of a liquid, with one participant asserting that creating a vacuum with water inside will lead to boiling.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various methods and ideas regarding boiling water without heat, but there is no consensus on a single approach or understanding of the concept.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference specific conditions such as vacuum creation and pressure changes, but the discussion does not resolve the underlying assumptions or definitions of boiling.

What is boiling? What does it mean when one says a liquid is "boiling"?

I remember a "Mr. Wizard" where they boiled water with an ice cube. First they boiled the water in a flask to get all of the air out and leave only water vapor. Then they corked the flask and took it off the flame. It stopped boiling. Then they rubbed it with an ice cube on the top of the flask and it quickly started boiling again.

Pressure play a part in determine the boiling pt of liquid.
Create a vacuum with water inside it, u will see the water boil.
