AI Thread Summary
Reducing VOC emissions from boat painting can be challenging, especially with 2-stage urethane paints that require low viscosity for effective spraying. Many modern paints are already formulated to minimize VOC levels. Using high-efficiency low-volume high-pressure (HPLV) guns can help, but they often necessitate thinning with lacquer thinner, which increases VOCs. Exploring alternative formulations or application methods may provide additional solutions. Effective strategies are essential for maintaining environmental standards while ensuring quality finishes.

I am interested in measures to reduce VOC levels in paint on boats in its outdoor or enclosed space

Are you spraying gel coat? Most paints have been already formulated to reduce VOCs. When spraying 2-stage urethane, it is difficult to reduce VOCs because the HPLV guns require low viscosity, i.e. the mixture is reduced with lacquer thinner.
