How Do You Rank Normal Force in This Physics Problem?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the ranking of normal forces in a physics problem involving a box against a wall. Participants clarify that the normal force does not depend on mass, as it is equal and opposite between the box and the wall. The normal forces at the middle bottom and left bottom positions are equivalent, leading to confusion about how to rank them. The consensus emphasizes that normal forces in this scenario are equal due to Newton's third law.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Newton's third law of motion
  • Basic knowledge of normal force in physics
  • Familiarity with free body diagrams
  • Concept of equilibrium in static systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the application of Newton's laws in static equilibrium problems
  • Explore free body diagram techniques for visualizing forces
  • Learn about the effects of friction on normal force
  • Investigate scenarios involving multiple forces acting on an object
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, educators teaching mechanics, and anyone seeking to understand the principles of forces and equilibrium in static systems.

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I don't think the normal force depends on mass so I wouldn't know how to rank I mean the normal force on the middle bottom and left bottom is the same so how can I rank?( i mean the force from box to wall = -force from wall to box so why would it depend on the mass)
