SUMMARY

A double acting steam engine operates by utilizing steam pressure on both sides of the piston, allowing for power generation during both the forward and return strokes. The return stroke is facilitated by the flywheel's inertia, which maintains motion after the steam pressure is released. The valve system plays a crucial role in directing steam to the appropriate side of the piston, ensuring continuous operation. Understanding the mechanics of the valve system and the flywheel's function is essential for grasping the complete cycle of the engine.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic principles of thermodynamics
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with steam engine components

hello

i'm a first year student of mech eng...although its embarassing to admit, but i actually do not understand how a double acting steam engine functions. more specifically, i don't understand the inner-mechanism of the return-stroke. how does the piston come back to the top dead centre? is the steam re-routed to the other side? or does the flywheel's inertia cause the return?

can anybody please show me a diagram/animation of what happens inside the valve-system and cylinder during a complete revolution of the flywheel?

thanks
