How does detergent lysis work and how to use it?

Click For Summary
Detergent lysis involves using a detergent to break down cell membranes, allowing for the extraction of proteins from samples like fish. For school projects, it's important to choose non-toxic detergents due to safety regulations. The Biuret test and Ninhydrin can be used to measure protein concentration after lysis. Alternative methods for protein extraction that comply with safety guidelines include using mild detergents and optimizing sample preparation. Effective research and experimentation are key to successfully isolating proteins for analysis.

TL;DR Summary: I have to do a project for my school, and I want to know how it works, because I just can't get any useful information of the internat alone.

I have a project for school, I want to analyse and compare the protein contents of some different species of fish. The problem I'm stuck with, is just separating the protein from nucleic acids and other organic matter. I want to get the concentration by either using the Biuret test, or using Ninhydrin so that I can use a photometer to get that concentration. But still I am either stuck with lysing my sample, and getting that protein, especially with the regulations we have at my school, I cannot use hard chemicals e.g. I can't do a phenol-Chloroform extractionl.
