How Does Pipe Expansion Affect Water Pressure?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on calculating the pressure in a wider section of a pipe when water flows at 6.1 m/s with an initial pressure of 3 × 104 N/m2. When the pipe's radius doubles, the cross-sectional area increases, leading to a decrease in pressure according to Bernoulli's principle. The relevant equations include the continuity equation and Bernoulli's equation, which relate pressure, velocity, and area in fluid dynamics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Bernoulli's equation
  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics principles
  • Familiarity with the continuity equation
  • Basic algebra for solving equations
NEXT STEPS
  • Study Bernoulli's equation in detail
  • Learn about the continuity equation in fluid dynamics
  • Explore the effects of pipe diameter changes on fluid pressure
  • Investigate real-world applications of fluid dynamics in engineering
USEFUL FOR

Students studying fluid mechanics, engineers working with hydraulic systems, and anyone interested in the principles of fluid dynamics and pressure changes in pipes.

Homework Statement

Water flows at 6.1 m/s in a horizontal pipe with a pressure of 3 ´ 104 N/m2. If the pipe widens to twice its original radius, what is the pressure in the wider section? Give answer in Pascals.

Homework Equations

volume = length x area
rate = volume / time
rate = volume x area

The Attempt at a Solution

Again, my professor's equations leave a bit to be desired. If anyone has a better equation (or is willing to help me solve this problem) please let me know. Sorry to post twice in a row!

Since the question is asking for Pressure, try to find an equation that includes Pressure. Also, give this a thought, would the pressure increase or decrease if the area increases?
