How exactly do guitar amps work and why can't I just plug my guitar into my computer and start playing with the computer speakers instead? I am just curious
This discussion clarifies the functionality of guitar amplifiers and the limitations of using a computer's microphone input for electric guitars. Guitar amplifiers increase the amplitude of the pickup signal, which typically ranges from 100 mV to over 1 V, making them essential for producing audible sound suitable for performances. Users are advised against plugging guitars directly into computer microphone jacks due to potential damage and inadequate sound quality. Instead, utilizing dedicated audio interfaces or pedals, such as the Line 6 POD HD300 or HD500, is recommended for optimal recording and playback experiences.
PREREQUISITESGuitarists, home recording enthusiasts, sound engineers, and anyone interested in optimizing their guitar sound for live performances or recordings.

Guitar amps color the sound in ways that no sound-card can replicate. I prefer tube amps, but there are some artists (David Hidalgo and BB King come to mind) that can slay you with solid-state amps. Use an amp, and learn how to mic the speaker(s) for interesting results.Sniperman724 said:Yea, I have actually tried to plug my guitar directly into my computer microphone jack because i wanted to see if it was a better way to record what I can play instead of placing my headset microphone in front of my amp and recording that way.
