Watch your safety, however: taking apart DVD readers and playing around with lasers is potentially dangerous!
 


This actually looks like a really cool project! I just ordered housing for the diode, and my DVD burner is dissembled.
 


It is very cool indeed :)

But again, take enough safety precautions both when building it (you're working with lasers and high voltage equipment) and when using it (it's not just an ordinary laser pointer).
