Grainger, an industrial supply company, uses a unique part numbering system consisting of five digits, where the first digit is always a number and the remaining four can be any combination of numbers and letters. This structure allows for a significant number of possible part numbers. The calculation for the total combinations is 10 (for the first digit) multiplied by 36 raised to the power of four (for the remaining digits), resulting in 16,796,160 possible part numbers. This extensive range reflects Grainger's capacity to offer a vast inventory of products. The mathematical breakdown highlights the efficiency of their part numbering system.

If anyone is not familiar with Grainger, they are an industrial supply company that sells just about everything you can imagine. I've always been particularly impressed by the fact that even though they carry so many parts, their part numbers are all 5 digits. I believe the first digit is always a number, and the next 4 digits are any combination of numbers and letters.

I'd like to see the math showing how many possible part numbers Grainger can have with this system.

Here is a little puzzle from the book 100 Geometric Games by Pierre Berloquin. The side of a small square is one meter long and the side of a larger square one and a half meters long. One vertex of the large square is at the center of the small square. The side of the large square cuts two sides of the small square into one- third parts and two-thirds parts. What is the area where the squares overlap?
